Please stop saying hello or asking for asking!

When using instant messaging like slack, discord, teams or whatever for working or in community group, I often end up with situations I call "asking for asking" like this one following.

If I sent you the link to this page, please, read this carefully (and don't take that personally 😘!).

ME, WORKING ON SOMETHING...

  • you: Hi!
  • me: Hello.

ME, WAITING WHILE YOU'RE WRITING YOUR MESSAGE...

  • you: How you're doing today?
  • me: Good, and you?

ME, WAITING WHILE YOU'RE WRITING YOUR MESSAGE...

  • you: Fine, thanks!

ME, WAITING WHILE YOU'RE WRITING YOUR MESSAGE...

  • you: Do you have a minute? Can I bother you?
  • me: Yes, what can I do for you?

ME, WAITING WHILE YOU'RE WRITING YOUR MESSAGE...

  • you: I'm working on [something] and I need [etc...]
  • me: ok, so you can [answer...]

So PLEASE, next time you find yourself saying “Hi” to someone on instant messaging, or asking if you may ask, just hold back that impulse to hit Enter, take a new breathe, and just type your message right away.

Deal? 😉

I'm not the only one to ask that, so some readings about it:
